—Someone possessing superior or specialized knowledge in a particular field
We don't need more books.
We need better books.
Teacher professional development can be a quagmire. Soft, wet, miry land, which shakes or yields under the feet. Teachers are made to sit through presentations where the science of learning is sporadically applied, and even when applied, little emphasis is placed on practice, leaving the teacher wondering, "How will this work in my classroom?"
In addition to poorly executed professional development, the long-suffering teacher contends with pervasive education myths. Learning styles. Left brain versus right brain. School kills creativity. Students can't learn from teachers they don't like. You only use 10% of your brain. The cone (or pyramid, or triangle) of learning. The list, unfortunately, is legion.
The discerning educator deserves better. Because the discerning educator knows better.
They know what the evidence tells them. They know what the research suggests, making their lessons more effective for their students.
And they are eager to learn more. They want to learn how to harness the science of learning in all its permutations to be 1% better at their craft. And then 1% better the next year, and the next.
Cognoscente Books exists to give voice to those willing to take on the challenge of bringing these evidence-grounded pedagogical techniques and ideas to these discerning educators.
Certainly, other publishers produce evidence-informed books. So, why haven't these books had more impact? Because no one can buy a book if they don't know about it.
Marketing.
The economics for the legacy publishers mean larger title lists and less money to market individual titles. It's a sink-or-swim approach.
At Cognoscente Books, we take a different approach. We believe the best books deserve the widest possible audience, and you can not ensure that when you publish 100 books per year.
So, our approach is to do less, better.
Not more books—better books.
Our mission is for all teachers to know the cognitive-science principles that are the pillars of the science of learning. And all teachers should be able to connect those principles to their practice in their classroom.
So, we are not just a publisher.
We are a movement.

The Four Pillars
Our Publishing Ethos

Acquisitions
We are a full-service publisher. Meaning, authors never pay us at any point in our relationship. We develop, edit, produce, and then market and sell all the books in our list.
But we are a very small publisher. We are highly selective in the titles we choose to publish. This allows us to focus our efforts on a select group of authors each year. Legacy publishers, with their bloated headcount and inefficient business processes, take a volume approach and gamble that one or two books from their list will break through.
The first step in the process is to have a discovery meeting. It is at this meeting that I learn more about you and your book idea, and you can learn more about how we work and what you can expect when you work with us.
If this sounds like a first date, then you are on the right track. We aren't a good fit for everyone, and it's best to learn that quickly over a cup of coffee rather than later in the relationship.
That meeting typically lasts anywhere from twenty to thirty minutes, and if we feel there is a mutual connection, we can discuss how we'd like to move forward.
So, if you have a book idea that you want to discuss with us, we encourage you to click on the submissions instructions button below to learn how to set up that discovery meeting.

Developmental
Editing
Legacy publishers rarely work with their authors to develop their manuscripts. Developing ideas takes time. And time is money.
At Cognoscente Books, we take an old-school publishing approach. Authors are the subject matter experts, but they don't always know the best way to present their ideas. We believe in helping our authors compellingly present their ideas.
During this developmental phase, we take a big-picture approach: how your chapters are organized, whether your argument builds logically, and how effectively your ideas connect with your intended audience. It is at this stage that we offer constructive feedback on what’s working, what needs clarification, and what could be restructured for greater impact.
Developmental editing ensures your narrative flows smoothly, your arguments are persuasive, and your structure supports the argument you want to make.
We are your collaborator, helping you see your manuscript from the reader’s perspective. We’ll highlight where your ideas are strong, where they may need support, and how your overall framework could be refined. Again, authors are the subject matter experts, but we know what makes a good book.
When Cognoscente Books invests in developmental editing, we ensure that your project has a solid framework before we move on to copyediting or proofreading. It’s about making sure your manuscript is not only well-written but also well-designed to communicate your ideas effectively.

Marketing
No one can buy a book if they don’t know it exists. And because we publish a select number of titles per year, we devote more resources to each title. Unlike the legacy publishers, we don’t take a volume approach at Cognoscente Books. Every book we publish is as important as the next.
